Chinese Painting Department was founded in 1957, with master’s and doctor’s degree awarded. It was awarded many honors for key subject in Shaanxi Province, famous major for fine arts in Shaanxi Province, first-class major for Chinese painting in colleges and universities in the province, national teaching team of Chinese painting, national feature major (painting major), innovative experimental area of provincial talent cultivation mode and comprehensive pilot reform for provincial major etc.. There are 30 full-time teachers, 6 professors and 15 associate professors at present; two gainers for national famous teacher award and two gainers for famous teacher award of provincial teaching. There are 423 students at present, including 305 undergraduates, 110 postgraduate students and 9 doctor students.

At present, there are two majors for Chinese painting and calligraphy equipped in Chinese Painting Department, and one expert studio is set up: Liu Wenxi Studio; four studios of major direction: figure painting studio, landscape painting studio, bird-and-flower painting studio and calligraphy studio; one research organization: Collaborative Innovation Center with Western Painting Style (Chang’an painting school and the school of “Loess Pictures”) research.

Chinese Painting Department insists on art aim of “inheritance, development and character”, relying on cultural deposit of Zhou, Qin, Han and Tang Dynasty, taking art spirit of “take root in life, and express time” as banner, and insists on teaching concept for “complement of China and foreign countries”, “origin subject”, “form and meaning complementary”, “one person one quality” and “spirit representation” to cultivate professional art talents having higher cultural and art accomplishment, able to independently engage in creation for Chinese painting and calligraphic art and basic theory research.
